7 Ways To Look Better In Photos

I’m the opposite of photogenic. The camera hates me, which is upsetting cause I love her very much, pfffff tough love, I’m telling you.

No, no, no, shhhhsh, don’t go telling me I’m wrong. I didn’t say I’m ugly. I’m not talking about that at all. I’m just saying I’m not photogenic.

It’s just how it is. Some people capture the light just right, others don’t.

That’s why a girl could look amazing in a photo and then just so-so in real life, or the opposite. Ugly in photos, sublime in day to day life. Okay, some are beautiful in both, but we knew that already. It’s because there is no justice in the world. But we knew that too.

  • When you’re a photographer, it becomes even more clear… Taking a photo of someone photogenic takes about three minutes.

7 Ways To Look Better In Photos (Get Photos.com Promo Codes)
On the other hand, taking a photo of a non-photogenic person requires you to take your time. Learn their face, wait for the right light, put them at ease (non-photogenic people are so used to being ugly in pitctures that whenever they see a camera, they start to get nervous which is very bad… For the photo. Vicious circle.)

The thing is that we live in such a visual world that even if you’re totally fine with how you look, it’s tough to resign yourself to not liking yourself in every picture.

When you look bad on your passport, on Facebook, on Instagram, on Google, etc, in the end it gets a liiiiiiiiittle depressing.

Since I’m an ugly duckling in photos but Gisele in life (Bahahahaha! Of course Garance, yep, definitely), I thought today I’d share some of the tricks I’ve been forced to figure out (being tired of looking at pictures and thinking oh, look, I look like my grandma here! Oh and here, I look like the Big Lebowski! Oh, and here! I look like I am Tom Waits wearing a dress!) on how to be prepared when a camera is around. I used to think that looking bad in photos was just a fact of life… But there are some things you can do to change.

All my advice here is predicated on the fact that the person taking your picture probably isn’t Scott Schuman or Peter Lindbergh or Bruce Weber. If one of them is taking your picture, let them do it all for you. You’ll be fine. Don’t even bother asking questions.

    1/ Photoshop yourself.

Light used well is like natural photoshop.

When you’re inside, always stand facing wherever the light is coming from (the window) it will erase everything from your wrinkles to bags under your eyes.

Inside or outside, don’t go in direct sunlight.

It will cast intense shadows. Unless, of course, it’s very early morning or sunset, in which case the light is amazing, soft, and makes everything and everyone beautiful.

If none of these apply, find a spot where the light is a little more moderate (or wait for for an overcast day).

At night, it’s war because it all depends on your camera (and on the flash, the setup, and the ISO settings) so just try to control the other stuff, and by that I mean my other six other tips here.

    2/ Powder your nose

Pat McGrath is the only one who can make shiny skin turn up good in pictures and it takes her hours. If you have shiny skin, grab a tissue and tap it on your T zone. It’s simple and works great.

Red or dark lipstick isn’t very photogenic, it can make your lips look thinner and give a pinched look. Transparent lip gloss, on the other hand, is perfect.

Smoky eye is a miracle as well and works 100% of the time in photos. It gives an interesting contrast and a touch of mystery.

Oh, I was about to forget : moisturize ! Legs, arms, hands, feet…
It’s a big thing on shootings and changes everything. My favorite lotion for the perfect voluptuous shine is the Crème de Corps, from Kiehl’s.

    3/ Be a poser.

It hit me the other day when I was reading Bazaar and look at an article about Ulyana Sergeenko who, walks around to the shows as if the entire world is her catwalk.

She’ll take the same pose for hours, working on the perfect pose for each outfit (Have you seen the photo with the overalls and stripped sweater? Try and find me a photo of that outfit where she doesn’t have her back to the camera) and honestly sometimes, it gets close to ridiculous.

Yes, but. All the photos of her are perfect.

I’m not saying to follow her example, but it doesn’t hurt to figure out and master a few poses that make you look good.

Okay okay, I’ll give you mine.

For close-ups, looking over my shoulder is cute. Or something a little more simple, chin down, big smile, open eyes.

Whenever I try to give the camera a “sexy look,” I end up looking ridiculous.
For a full body shot, I try to face the camera, because I have boobs, a profile shot can make you gain 20 pounds right there. What. It’s true! I swear!!!

4/ Figure out your best profile.

We all have one. It’s usually the left one.
Know which one is which and it changes EVERYTHING.
You can ask a friend to take a few pictures to figure it out because it’s hard to do it with a mirror.
Once you’ve found it, use and abuse it.

Celebrities do that all the time. If I am ever interviewing one, she’ll say to me, “Do you mind if I sit on this side instead? It’s my good side!” and they should – it’s their job to look good. I, on the other hand, have to say ok ! and sit on my bad profile side. Oh well ;)

5/ Ask yourself : where is the camera?

If you’re standing and the camera is above you, you’re gonna get squished and lose 5 good inches, so not fair. It’s best to have the camera at chest height to avoid any deformations.

If you’re seated, however, a shot from above is a Godsend.

Lift your head toward the camera which is usually where the light is coming from (remember the light Photoshop effect) and it hits all the right angles, defines your jaw which and can thin you up a bit (and seeing as the goal in life of the modern woman is to look thin, you know…).

This is also my number one advice for selfies : look up!

    6/ Play.

Learn to love yourself. Have fun. It’s hard to do but to be beautiful in photos you have to play with the camera a little. Move, laugh, do something silly, make a sexy face.
Don’t keep the same overly frozen smile for five minutes while photos are being taken. Try to find different emotions within you, crack yourself up, chat it up, have someone tell you a story, move.

    So, play the game, BUT….

    7/ Say no

Sometimes, conditions are perfect for a horrible photo.

You’ve just spent the whole night out, you’re exhausted, the light is shitty, you’re wearing the Big Lebowski clothes (it happens to everyone), you’re sweating, your hair looks like it just spent three days at Katz, oh, well, it’s just not your day.

Say no to the photo. Simple as that.

It’s tough, I know. I could never say no to a photo at first. We all want to please others and end up saying to ourselves “Oh pffff, who cares if I look ugly in photos?!” but when you can, saying no is sometimes the best solution.

Ok, if you really can’t say no, do what the fashion editors do : put on the biggest sunglasses you can find. Yes, even at night. So what?

Ok, I think that’s everything I know. Have I forgotten anything? Any questions you want to ask?
Oh, and, just a little survey… Do you consider yourself to be photogenic?

Out of the ordinary Beauty Tips that work

    Use toothpaste on yellow nails.

This usually happens when you let nail polish stay on your nails for very long and when you’ve used cheap nail polish. Whiten them all up by rubbing toothpaste to remove the stains. You can also add a few drops of lemon for extra whitening, it’s a natural bleaching agent.

Use suntan oil to treat damaged hair.

Here’s another use for that coconut suntan oil you love so much. If your tresses have been damaged from over styling or coloring, you can use this oil to treat it. Rinse your hair with warm water and then with a dollop of suntan oil, rub this on your hair. Wrap it in plastic cling wrap and secure with a towel. Sleep with this on overnight. The next day, wash your hair with baby shampoo (or anything moisturizing) to get the greasiness out.

Out of the ordinary Beauty Tips that work
Protect skin from the pool and the beach.

Don’t you hate the chlorine smell after swimming in the pool and the sticky feel of sea salt on your hair and skin after a dip in the beach? You can help minimize these effects by showering first with non-chlorinated water, which fills your pores and hair follicles. By doing this your hair won’t soak up much more water and then the residues will be easy to shower off.

    Treat burns with milk.

This tip is from Katie Wright (thanks Katie!) If you’re burnt badly, first aid treatment could be standing under the shower and pouring canned milk over the burns. It will help pull the heat from the burn until you can get medical treatment.

    Hydrate before travelling.

Since when you’re in a plane, you’re much closer to the sun, the proximity lets you be exposed more to the solar rays. Avoid drinking alcohol and salty foods because they are dehydrating. Drink lots of water instead, this will help your skin a lot.

    Powder Your Roots

If by any chance you have no chance to jump into the shower and you need to look your best. Say for example you’ve spend the whole night preparing for an important presentation. Get a fluffy makeup brush and dab it onto loose powder and then brush it on the roots of your hair. Shake off the excess. The powder will soak off the grease in your locks.

Cure Calluses with Vaseline or petroleum jelly

Out of the ordinary Beauty Tips that work
It’s very unsightly to see hard calluses on your feet especially when you’ve been wearing closed shoes for a long time. I’ve seen a friend do this. To soften these tough calluses, she puts on petroleum jelly on them and puts on socks before going to bed.

    Spot-Treat Smudges.

I find cotton tips very usual for this. You can use it on your eyelids if you’ve made a mistake with your eyeliner and for your nails to correct a stray nail polish line.

Soften Your Body with an Avocado

Since avocadoes are natural moisturizers. Mash one up and slather this on your body just before taking a shower. The body mask will do wonders for your skin.

    Super-Glue a Nail

Yikes! Accidents sometimes happen and when one of your nails break, you can choose to Super Glue it for the meantime. Add an opaque nail polish to cover the crack. Then when you get the chance to, better to cut it off.

Use Makeup Remover on Stubborn Lipstick

Instead of rubbing vigorously on your lips to remove red or dark lipstick, just dab on a cotton ball with makeup remover instead. This will help your lips from getting chapped and bruised.

    Tame Brows with Eye Cream

Don’t you just hate it when there appears unsightly white specks on your brows that look like dandruff? This means they’re a bit dry, keep them hydrated with rich eye cream.

Use brown sugar to treat dandruff

If you’ve tried all the dandruff shampoos that you can buy and still your dandruff persists, try out this homemade treatment instead. Mix two parts of brown sugar with one part conditioner and then use this on your scalp. Leave on for about 3 minutes and then rinse it off.

    Buff with Baking Soda

I’ve laughed at that episode in Friends when Ross went to a self-tanning sauna and got disastrous results. If you find yourself streaking (not glowing) after applying self-tanner (not all of us become experts at the first try), scrub away the unsightly spots with a loofah doused with baking soda.

    Brush on Hair Spray

What I hate about hair sprays is that your hair becomes so stiff and the overall look doesn't look natural anymore. For a neat hair trick, spray the hair spray on your hair brush after blow drying it. This way, you’ll still get the effects of the hair spray without making your hair look very stiff.

Boost Body Lotion with Baby Oil

For that shiny leg effect but don’t have any bronzing lotion with you, mix in a little baby oil into your everyday lotion to get the same effect.

Dab Body Oil on a Hangnail

Put on apricot oil, the kind found in health-food stores, to protect cuticles from turning rough and raggedy.

For younger hands, rub lemon and salt

There was one picture I saw before that was posted on Twitter, it was the hands of a celebrity. I was shocked because when I learned who it belonged to, she was only my age. I looked at my hands and they don’t look that old. So ladies, take care of those lovely hands, yes? This homemade concoction will help. Remove dead skin cells by rubbing lemon juice and sea salt on your hands with the aid of a toothbrush.

    Freeze Your Eyeliner

I love eyeliners because they perk your eyes right back up. However sometimes they get too soft to be applied. A quick remedy for this will be to stick this into a freezer for 15 minutes.

    Use Toothpaste on a Zit

Use just a pea-size amount. Let sit for 15 minutes to absorb the oil so the pimple won't get more clogged, then wash off. Additional tip from Heyhaie: Don’t use any toothpaste that whitens, the bleach will cause the zit to redden.

    Heat Up Your Curler

If you have stick-straight lashes, try blasting your metal eyelash curler with a hair dryer for a couple seconds to heat it up so your lashes bend more easily. And use a waterproof mascara. The formula dries faster than other mascaras, so it sets the curl more effectively.

    Use Soap Without Water

You know those fancy bars that are actually too pretty to use? Toss them in your underwear or tee-shirt drawers to make your skin smell delicious. You may also use fabric softener in packets. (Tip from Taysialouise)

    Lubricate Your Lashes

An easy way to draw attention to your eyes without putting on a pile of makeup is to comb petroleum jelly lightly through the tips of eyelashes to get a sexy, subtle sparkle. It might feel icky if you put on a lot, so watch how much you’ll rub in.

    Steamroll Flyaways

Spray on hair spray, then roll the can over your strands. The round bottle fits the curved shape of your head, locks in the spray, and flattens out frizz. You can also use a bit of lotion to further tame the flyaway.

    Air-Dry Your Curls

Let your hair dry indoors before going out in the cold. Sometimes my curls look best when dried naturally instead of using a blow drier. It’s friendlier to your tresses too.

Press a Tea Bag on Splotches

If your skin is sensitive or just looking irritated and puffy for some reason, steep a bag of green tea for a minute or two, let it cool down, and dab it over your face. The antioxidants in the tea take down inflammation.

    Shave with Conditioner

If you’ve ran out of shaving cream, you can use conditioner instead. Yep don’t use that body wash, the moisturizer in the conditioner will help prevent razor burns and will keep your skin smooth.

    Amp Shine with Vinegar

Mix one part vinegar with four parts carbonated water, and soak dry hair. Leave on for 15 minutes before you shampoo to lock in shine and combat dullness.

    Exfoliate Your Pits

If your underarms start to look dry and flaky, an easy trick is to exfoliate them with a gentle face scrub to keep that skin pretty when going sleeveless.

    Customize Your Body Lotion

Instead of shelling out for an expensive perfumed body product, you can make your own by pouring a few drops of fragrance into any scent-free lotion. Rub it on-the scent will last for hours.
    "Brush" with Mouthwash

If you're too wiped out after a late night of partying to clean your teeth, rinse with water and mouthwash, then use a dry toothbrush on the area where your teeth hit your gums.

    Use egg-whites for eyebags

Dab a bit of egg white on his eye bags. The egg whites will tighten the skin right up. Let the egg whites dry before putting on make-up.

    Make an Egg-White Mask

To revive tired, dull skin without hitting the spa table, try this: Crack open an egg in a bowl, separate the yolk, and use the egg whites to make a face mask. The proteins help to heal and restore skin's moisture. Leave it on for five minutes, and rinse off. A note though, since egg whites tighten the skin and egg yolks moisturize, best not to use the egg white mask on a dry skin.

7 BEAUTY USES FOR AN EMPTY CANDLE JAR

Empty candle jars can be perfect storage containers for small items. I’m going to show you 7 ways you can use candle jars to store beauty items! The possibilities are endless though.

    Beauty Coupons
What would you store in your candle jars? Get coupons from Beauty.com
    1. Hold cotton balls (or other bathroom items like cotton swabs or cosmetic wedges).

This is a great way to store essential beauty supplies on your bathroom counter without buying a specific container for the same purpose.

    2. Use as a brush holder.

Just add some vase filler (I get mine at Michael’s) and stick your makeup brushes in the jar. It looks nice and it keeps your brushes in good shape

    3. Display your lip products

I happen to have a lot of lip products. While I already have a separate acrylic holder for lipsticks, I didn’t have anything to hold my lip glosses or lip crayons. This is the perfect solution! I think it looks pretty too!

    4. Hold nail polish.

This will only hold a handful of polishes so it shouldn’t be your only polish storage, unless you only have a few bottles to begin with. I happen to have hundreds! If you’re in the same boat with lots and lots of polish too, you can use this idea to hold the polishes you want to use next. Place the jar on your vanity, shelf, or counter top and rotate them out as you use them.

Bonus idea: Use a few jars to separate polish by color and display them on a shelf side-by-side. I think that would look really cute!

    5. Store perfume samples.

I have a ton of perfume samples. I can put them all in this jar, place it on my guest bathroom counter top, and let my guests use them when the mood strikes.

    6. Display small eyeshadow palettes.

Once again this isn’t going to hold all of your eyeshadow palettes. This works for small thin palettes that you might want to remember to use. I have a good amount of small drugstore palettes that can easily fit. I can rotate them out too, so they all get a turn.

    7. Store other samples.

If you subscribe to any monthly sample boxes, your sample collection is probably growing. With this solution, you can store them in the candle jar so that they’re easily accessible. I always have to remind myself to use my samples – this is a simple way to group them together and place it in plain sight.

There are obviously a lot of other storage options for these jars. They could hold craft supplies, office supplies, and knick-knacks too. You can decorate them or place your own labels on them. With all of these cool options, I’m wanting to burn my candles a little quicker!
